"Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that count."

- Winston Churchill

Our team has an unrivaled understanding of various areas of law. We specialize in Criminal Law, Family Law, and complex litigation. Out of the thousands of clients we have represented, most have ended in favorable outcomes.

At our law firm, we believe in only the facts. No Matter the charges, the allegations, or the client we are here to ensure your best interests are always exceeded. We take the time to listen to their concerns, analyze their unique situations, and develop customized legal strategies to address all circumstances.

The law firm was founded in the late 1940s by Larry Mattson. In 1954, he formed a partnership with Donald Olson. Attorney Mattson retired to Florida in 1959 while Attorney Olson passed away in March 1976. Stephen D. Willett purchased the practice from Mr. Olson’s Estate in June 1976.

Stephen D Willett

Attorney Stephen D. Willett has been practicing law for over 50 years appearing regularly in State, Federal, Trial, and Appellate Courts. He has practiced law at the highest levels during his career. Filed briefs with the United States Supreme Court, the 7th Circut Court of the United States, and multiple district courts in several States.

Attorney Willett has represented and been General Counsel for some of the largest names in Wisconsin History. To name a few, Ocean Spray Juice, Phillips Plastics, The Bank of Dallas Holding Company, and Marquip Inc. He also was elected 11 times as the City Attorney for the City of Phillips.

Attorney Willett is proud to have worked with numerous Governors. During the 1970’s he worked with governors Dreyfus and Earl. He was appointed as the Wisconsin Commissioner for the Commission of Uniform State Laws. During the 1980s-2000s he worked with Governors Thompson, McCallum, and Doyle on some of the largest environmental, economic, and Natural Resources solutions that are still being practiced to this day. He was the Chairman of the environmental quality committee and law enforcement (Wardens) for 18 years. Attorney Willett was a member of the Wisconsin Judicial Council for 22 years serving as its vice chairman and chairman.

Under Governor Walker and Evers, Attorney Willett has worked extensively with the Wisconsin Technical College System Board. He was the Chairman of the Wisconsin Higher Education Aids board focusing on the interconnectedness of our economy and education, both in terms of cost and effectiveness. Attorney Willett’s belief on this is; “Education is the driving force of our economy. Our future workforces are rapidly changing and Wisconsin needs to ally all employers and technical colleges who are educating our future workforce. Wisconsin needs to remain competitive and be ready to meet the challenges and changes in our Past, Present, and future employment needs. The Wisconsin education system will always be one of my largest worries because of the volatile nature of today’s workforces.”

Meet the Team

  • I was born and raised in Phillips, Wisconsin graduating from high school here. I received my Administrative Associate’s Degree from North Central Technical College. I Have worked for Attorney Willett for 18 years as his Legal Secretary/Paralegal.

  • I have lived all across the United States on both coasts and now the Midwest. I am from Dillon, Montana, and joined the Marine Corps in 2016 and was stationed at Camp Pendelton in Oceanside, California. I was deployed to Kuwait in 2018 to where me and my team were in charge of running an entire aircraft squadron. I moved to Wisconsin in 2020 where I met my beautiful wife and now have 3 kids. When I began working for Attorney Willett I was so inspired I decided to pursue being a defense attorney as a living and am currently in school to do just that! Coming from my upbringing, jobs like a “lawyer or Doctor” seem unachievable but Attorney Willett proved me wrong and I hope to be half the lawyer he is someday.
